The weather is mainly dry and very hot in Summer, yet has a fairly cold Winter with regular overnight frosts and the occasional snowfall. Of note is that the nearby mountain ranges receive plenty of snow in Winter.
Key sites to see include the Plaza Mayor – possibly the best known Plaza in the city, the Puerta del Sol – this plaza is at the heart of the city and one of the busiest places that you will come across, being a popular meeting spot for local people, guided tours, festivals and street performances. Note though that this also makes it a popular spot for pickpockets.
Other recommended places to visit are the Catedral de la Almudena, a huge cathedral finished towards the end of the 20th century, and the Gran Via, which is one of the cities most bustling streets and home to numerous shopping malls.
