Sending Baby Milk to China
It was in 2008 when the initial baby milk scandal occurred in China, just before the start of the Beijing Olympic Games. If you haven't heard of this before, it was a truly shocking situation caused by the milk of a particular company (Sanlu Group) being adulterated with the chemical melamine, which was used to increase the product's nitrogen level, allowing it to pass quality control tests due to the appearance of an increased protein content.
However, the affects of melamine hadn't been thoroughly tested and the kidneys of thousands of babies and infants were severely adversely affected due to it. Once the scandal was brought to light, shops obviously took the product off their shelves, leading to widespread desperation amongst parents needing to feed their little ones.
This lead many people around the world purchasing baby milk formula in other countries and sending it into China at a huge profit, preying on parents' desperation to keep their children nourished. In turn, this also lead to a scarcity of the product in other countries and so the problem was only exacerbated.
Numerous stores had to apply security measures to stop greedy exporters from clearing the shelves of baby milk and sending it into China for massive profits. So, you can see why there are now such strict restrictions of the amount of baby milk that can be exported to China from many countries around the world.
Even after all these years, consumers in the UK are only a allowed to send 4kg of baby milk formula per shipment, although, bizarrely, there is no limit on how many shipments you can make.
